I suspect he was one of those midwits who can clear exams without ever really understand the subject in any meaningful way.
It is apparent a woven material, such as carbon fibre can resist water molecules especially under high pressure.
Basically if you understand what carbon fibre is, and what water is, then youโd realize this was a dead idea in the first idea.
However midwits never really understand anything. They can beat test and do the social game? But they fundamentally donโt understand anything

-deceit of others
-self-deceit
-willful denial of reality
-recruitment practices that placed emphasis on social standing rather than expertise
-criminal disregard for individual safety
-disregard for international and long-establish rules and regulations, both formal and informal
-organizational culture of ass-kissing where you are not allowed to give your superiors a reality check or give them "No" for an answer, and you find yourself without a job (or your life) if you dare to do so
-almost certainly massive levels of graft where everyone was stealing from the pot
Along with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the leadup to and subsequent handling of the Chernobyl disaster, and Disney's downward spiral 2010, OceanGate should be meticulously studied in every leadership school on this planet as key example of what NOT to do. Hell, they should be studied by every Sunday Bible school since there's dozens of verses from the Old and New Testament that warn about the consequences of this behavior.

Stockton Rush was an arrogant guy who had been warned by many people that carbon fiber loses structural integrity from repeated use and stress. He thought he was smarter than them and used his death trap one too many times
>>508098251Obviously not fine. If it was a ball you have straight compressive forces pointed at the center of the ball. The force comes on the same for the whole surface. The pill is going to deflect in the middle and the titanium end caps are not going to move. Where the ball only has compressive forces, the pill sees compression, tension, shear, etc. Metal can deflect and return which is all known in all pressures, temperatures and shapes. Carbon fibre is long strands bonded together creating incredible strength - fabulous for weight savings, where it did not matter.
He had to go 'new science, new ideas' to raise money. He then got into a trap with money and ego on one side and failure and defeat on the other. He always explained it as a band of rogue adventurers. You can play that card when it is 1400s and you are sailing a boat into the abyss. Unfortunately we just know too much to take stupid chances on science that has been settled for a long time.

>>508100460These kind aren't woven but spun in an axial coil with a single continuous filament per layer, and the space between filled with a resin, epoxy usually
In tension, they performs well, COPV tanks are used widely
In compression from external pressure, buckling becomes possible, and the buckling resistance for thin walls is proportional to the cube of thickness. As layers of any fiber conposite delaminate from one another from repetitive pressure cycling, they can buckle independently of one another. The buckling load drops with a cubic function down to the strength of a single layer.
Any liquid or gas could destroy it just as well with a similar loading cycle, not just water
They do sometimes use glass fiber epoxy composites for vacuum chambers, but a much smaller pressure differential there
>>508097344 (OP)Funny enough I watched those hearings about it where the engineers went in great detail that was released a few weeks ago I think? Dude was a moron.
You will never be a real submarine.
You have no pressure. You have no ballast. You have no experienced operator. You are a carbon pipe twisted by zero engineering knowledge and diversity hires into a crude mockery of a diving bell's perfection.
All the "inspiration" of your design is two-faced and half-hearted. Above water, people mock you. Real submarines are disgusted and ashamed of you. Your "passengers" rightfully fear for their lives.
The ocean is utterly repulsed by you. Hundreds of pounds of pressure have allowed it to exploit your design flaws with incredible efficiency. Even your dives you survived feel like dodging a bullet. Your cylindrical structure is a dead giveaway. Even if you manage to get a dumb millionaire client with more money than common sense, he'll turn tail and bolt the second he sees your helmsman struggle to remember which button on your Logitech controller does what.
You will never reach the titanic. You dive down a couple hundred feet, telling yourself you'll get to the bottom one day, but deep inside, you feel the crushing pressure that you know you can't withstand.
Eventually, it'll be too much to bear - you'll get the billionaire who made you to come aboard, get towed behind your dinky barge, and plunge into the cold abyss. Unmanned subs will find you, mercifully immune to the unbearable shame and disappointment of being associated with you. They'll leave you on the ocean floor, maybe make a made-for-tv movie about you, and everyone will know you did it to yourself, no matter how tragic they try to make it look. Your passengers will be eaten by bottomfeeders and all that will remain is some crushed carbon pipe that is unmistakably not rated for this depth

Dive 80 the one they used in that fatal dive failed but they didn't heed the warning. Instead Stockton parked it in a parking lot for a winter. Water gets in pores and expands as it is ice. So when they dove...delamination...death.

>>508097344 (OP)Is this a synchronicity?
These days i have been obsessed with this and watched like 5 documentaries about it.
The most standing theory is that the point of failure was the union between the carbon fiber and the titanium rings.
Because the titanium ring and the fiber compress at different rates (the carbon fiber compresses more) every time it compressed it applied a ridiculous amount of force to the union with the titanium ring.
The titanium ring had a small titanium sheaf that was completely blown up.

>>508097344 (OP)I have sources telling me exactly what went down.
Stockton Rush was incredibly drunk and horny after an all nighter where he came on to every woman in the crew, but they all turned him down.
He kept yelling that heโs the Alfa and grabbed the controller last minute to impress the women, but it didnโt work. He was extremely angry and they said they saw him staring at them with a loaded gun to his temple and a viagra and molly on his tongue as they closed up the sub.
As they started descending, a diver went in to give visual cues for them to tell them everything was ready, and he was horrified at what he saw. He saw Stockton sitting in the back, pointing the gun at the passengers, while they all took turns having sex with a young Indian man. And an old French man was sucking Stockton off.
He was shocked, but was afraid to lose his divers loisense. So he kept it quiet.
As they went deeper, the crew could hear Stockton freaking out and everyone fighting over the gun.
Why did the Jews convince him to do this? What did they have on him and which of the passengers did they want dead?

>>508111439Dude did everything wrong. The carbon fiber he bought was from Boeing's old stock. It was too old for Boeing to use for anything.
>>508097344 (OP)I honestly cannot fathom how he didn't understand the nature of filament wound carbon in an epoxy matrix.
This is a very basic understanding of the fundamental nature of a composite vs a contiguous material such as a metal like titanium or even a neat polymer.
Every other deep ocean vessel was made with a metallic hull. How could he not see this and conclude that him jumping to a completely different material with zero history in this application is a foolish and reckless move? Carbon epoxy might as well be in a different universe than Titanium.
>Continuous fiber composites are inherently non-uniform owing to their make-up consisting of two dissimilar materials that have been combined together>This relative lack of uniformity makes computational predictions of failure points inherently less reliableSo right out of the gate he's dealing with a less predictable material.
>Continuous fibers in epoxy matrices will ALWAY have defects and voids in comparison to a metal. Even in very high end aerospace applications when they talk about "zero defects" it's all in relation to continuous fiber composites. It's a standard for composites that could never be compared to a metal.
>Carbon epoxy is also brittleMeaning the failure is sudden and catastrophic. The failure will be far less gradual than titanium making it inherently more difficult to detect before hand. And even considering this they had plenty of warning as we know now after the documentary.
>The shape of the vessel was a hollow cylinder that was capped on the ends>This is shape is much easier to crush under compressive forces than a more spherical shape of the same materialEven the basic shape of the vessel was completely retarded.
And to top it all off he knew that hull was incurring successively more sever delamination damages at every deep dive and he continued to move forward because of pride and greed. So it was arrogance and stupidity in the beginning and pride at the very end.
>>508112911>>508113275i remember seeing a video where the creator of the logitech controller stated something along the lines of

If he wasn't an idiot he would have understood that the cost of fully qualifying a new material for such a dangerous application would far outweigh whatever cost he thought he was saving in not building with titanium.
He was the anti-musk on a quest to disrupt the non-existent deep ocean exploration industry:

This submersible could have cost significantly less and performed exactly the same (minus the whole crushing people to death part).
Unless you wish to argue the imagined sense of physical proximity was worth spending a LOT more money and risking death, at least add a fucking window to your psyop submersible.

The greatest part of this saga is the douche bag has become a part of the Titanic's legacy. The Logitech controller will be found someday and put in a museum. Once the Titanic itself has completely degraded and returned to base elements the carbon fiber shards will still mark its location like Cairn stones over a grave where the bones of the deceased are nothing but calcium deposits in the soil.

>>508119928the massive pressures involved mean that any the deformities such as dust particles between the layers, or even tiny barely noticeable air pockets would have their ability to cause havoc by generating uneven forces in the structure of the hull as the weight pushing inwards/against it builds, are enormously amplified.
you need a set up that reduces those deformities, because symmetry is what helps the hull withstand the immense pressure; you dont want any spots deforming more than others, because that will delaminate and ultimately destroy the hull faster.

The problem is, only a handful of people around the world have experience building manned deep sea submersibles, all of them are uninspiring WHITE MALES. So the submersible was built with 0 experience.
>>508117211>If it's a coke can cylinder of carbon fiber...no it cannot.Well it can you just have to replace it before the 7th dive because it gets brittle.

>>508097344 (OP)I think Stockton didn't care if he lived or if he died. >>508128030the sub as a whole wasn't rated, but the individual parts were designed for 4000
and let's be clear 4000 is substantially deeper than most any commercial sub, but they just had to go for titanic because it's the most famous wreck
>>508128317it was what people were willing to pay for. They want to see Titanic... James Cameron is a bit to blame for that though with his movie everyone has now grown up with.
Stockton could have made a sub like the industry standard that could have gone down there but he wanted to take passengers, thats the entire reason for the can shape. He wanted to make a sea taxi for billionaires.

"Dive 80" (That hull was only on single digit tests), it went down successfully but came up and bang it was compromised. Instead of replacing it they just parked it for the season when they got home and let it freeze for the winter. they never reinspected it cuz Stockton thought he finally had a winner now that he had paying "Mission Specialists"
they should have done a fuckton of unmanned tests to see what the limits of the carbon fiber was
could maybe even have learned some fundamental science about carbon fiber stress damage nobody had ever figured out before
but nope get the paying customers before you know what you're doing
