Growth is seriously unpleasant and ascending to the summit of achievement and accomplishment is straight up painful. Most people are not cut out for that.

i ask them to name a single political principle that they hold that they wish that they didn't have to hold.

if all your beliefs about the truths of the world conveniently line up with exactly the way that you want things to be, you must be lying to yourself. it is statistically impossible that you would just happen to have a personality perfectly aligned with all the objectively correct ways to exist in the world.
