"Individual organisms are best thought of as adaptation-executers rather than as fitness-maximizers." No person with the deliberate goal of maximizing their alleles' inclusive genetic fitness would eat a cookie unless they were starving, yet the genes encode for the sugar and carbohydrate seeking behavior anyways.
