We have cheap healthcare, but you have to know how to use the system. EMT bills, just ignore them. They would bill people just for looking at their ambulance. You have to know how to negotiate. On the other side of the coin, everybody is trying to get paid, so they will give a bill to anyone that moves.

So, on the surface, our medical system sounds like shit. But, on the flipside, your healthcare system sounds like shit, too. It really is about navigating the health system in the country where you live.

So the system is fucked, yeah, but THIS is exactly why there is an EMS response time crisis that is only getting worse and worse. You see, most ambulance agencies lose money on doing emergency 911 responses because they know most people will not pay. Health insurance is getting rarer and rarer for people to have and call volume increases every year. So what do the agencies do? They all want to transition to IFT or transport agencies. The hospital will pay for the ambulance to chauffeur people around in between facilities and keep the money flowing for those that DO have insurance. So when that small local agency with only two ALS (medic, since there’s a big difference between a medic and an EMT) trucks is tied up with each doing interfacility transports - it means that there is no one properly trained or equipped to handle your cardiac arrest when you pop a widowmaker from one too many Arby’s roast beef sandwiches. Why? Because they decided to take that dialysis run or the two hour trip between hospitals because it is actually going to pay the company. Not that you’ll care when you’re dead, but your family just might. Why bother actually trying to save lives when they can get guaranteed pay from doing these medical Ubers they can charge 1,500 a pop for? Afterall, everyone will just “ignore the bill” for that allergic reaction, or stroke.
The alternative is switching entirely to a fire based EMS system. And ignoring how monumentally retarded firemedics are, this is a large increase in tax burden. And no one wants to pay increased taxes for a service…until it comes time to actually need it.

It’s true. If a call is bls (requiring an emt level of care) you get billed 250 plus mileage off the bat. ALS is 550 plus mileage and then whatever equipment gets used. If you’re in an unstable tachycardia? Those pads alone will be 100 bucks. A couple rounds of adenosine, the IV and fluids and you’re looking at over 1500 BEFORE we even get you to the hospital. It’s wild but a lot of that cost is due to how much we have to pay for the equipment and medications ourselves (as an agency). Whereas that uber can just get you there for 20-30 bucks. Honestly that case is really rare, I’ve worked at a lot of services both nonprofits and private agencies and they normally don’t bill for dead on arrival calls with obvious signs of death.

Our last attempt at government regulated healthcare, Obamacare has dramatically increased healthcare costs over the past decade and a half. We also have $37 TRILLION in debt and can't afford more socialism because we're broke.

What we need is to allow the importation of drugs from other countries to drive down prices and for people to use their insurance money to go overseas for cheaper procedures and then keep the money left over from the average cost of the procedure so we can drive down healthcare costs.

We have a healthcare cartel system that uses corrupt government regulations to combine the worst aspects of capitalism and socialism into a corrupt yet heavily regulated system that screws over the consumer. More US government involvement is not the answer.

It's a fundamental reversal of the doctor patient relationship, in Australia all doctors work for the government and none give a crap about patients. Doctors will not respect your wishes, doctors do not care about the outcome of your treatment.

Secondly it deprives the doctor any choice in who they take as a patient, so you end up with services that are not culturally appropriate, not wanted, and doctors who are not welcome in the community. In Australia Indian doctors keep molesting women. If it was our money nobody would chose and indian doctor, but it's the governments money.

Third is the corruption, which is often staggering. it allows corporate to cheat the government itself. The price Australians paid for covid vaccines was obscene and the government made that deal. Cartels form because they are unionizing against the government not the consumer. Of course this is the opposite of paying $1000 for an asthma inhaler, but the overall cost to consumers isn't actually lower they just pay through tax. Medicare is about a quarter of our governments entire annual expenditure. It's why we have no army, why we have no infrastructure, we can't afford it.

Fourth is the equity issue, because it punishes those in good health financially. We pay a half of our income in taxes and get nothing. We don't get aged care, health care, welfare, we are carrying half the population. But this is of course opposite of punishing the poor for being poor.

I prefer universal healthcare but it's by no means black and white, and in Australia fanatical support for universal welfare is the hallmark of left wing politics. gibs.

Thanks for actually staying on topic. Now I would say healthcare is scalable, like it really doesn't matter how big or small a country is, you can just scale it to the size that it needs to be. As for rural stuff, I would imagine under a pure universal healthcare system, it would be even better because under the supposed cuts Republicans want to make to the meagre amount the US government actually spend on healthcare, some hospitals in those areas will shut down.

I'm not a fan of illegal immigration, but I feel like it's often times used as a scapegoat for other issues. For example, you could just give every citizen a health card with a photo ID that just needs to be updated every ten years, this could also work as photo ID for voting to improve voting security while not disenfranchising anyone.

Being small and irrelevant to the world has it's perks. Nobody looks at Slovenia's government or healthcare industry and thinks they can jew a reasonable amount of money out of you. I doubt you even have a pharmaceutical industry to begin with.
As the leader of the west and guardians of the free people of the world, we have to deal with real problems that come from granting power to our government over ourselves.
