>>508166318 Actual guns, also called cannon, fire in an arc. They go over line infantry. They also were often set up on elevated areas to help line of sight for such actions.
>>508165556 (OP) Dispersed line until close enough to converge in grouped attacks on the enemy line. Wherever there's a breakthrough the signal is given to send in more troops. If the enemy line is not broken you're up for bayonet and sword charge but you didn't lose so many people to enemy fire by staying in a packed line or worse, in a column.
>>508165556 (OP) Column lost, so. Uh anyway, column relies much more on discipline and order after a certain point. By which I mean, so long as you can get your men to stand in line and fire 3 volleys before the column arrives you have a good chance of winning. And if your line breaks you just reform. If the column breaks and runs it's over for the entire column, you are not reforming that today.
>>508165556 (OP) Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. Go play a total war game.

>>508165953 Why woukd you pist about a subject you have absolutely no knowledge of? The French under napoleon were famous for attacking in columns during battles
>>508171307 >Approximately 78 British generals died during World War I, according to historians. This number includes those killed in action, those who died of wounds, or those who died as a result of active service. Researchers also note that around 76 French generals, 2 Belgian, 2 Italian, and 2 Romanian generals also died, along with 70 German, 40 Austro-Hungarian, and one Ottoman general. That's the neat thing about WW1, even the generals were dying in meat wave artillery trench siege warfare
>>508165556 (OP) Going prone and shooting from a prone position. Yes you can reload a musket while prone, that's how people did it during the civil war in America.
>>508165556 (OP) retard thread both lines, columns and squares are useful the first for firing volleys, the second either to move around or to charge (until the enemy has artillery), the third for repelling cavalry charge and cross fire between separate forces (the battle of the Pyramids is a good example of squares repelling various attacks solely with gun fire)

Column to attack Line to defend against infantry Square to defend against cavalry Artillery vs Artillery until you gain the advantage. Then Artillery vs infantry until they withdraw or you force them to attack. Roundshot at long range, cannister/grape close quarters.
>>508174933 >Column to attack you mean, like, for advancing to a position before transition into line formation? no way they actually engaged while still in a column
