Our bike lanes here are extremely skinny and narrow. And there’s no fencing between them and the cars.
So you get bikes doing 20km/h next to cars going 60, or even 80. And nothing between you.
So if they fuck up and go over the line, they’re going to die. Which means you have to be super careful any time you pass a cyclist. You have to be ready for them to cross that line. I’ve seen it happen numerous times where the person on the bike maybe doesn't see the cars coming and they’ll cross over onto the roadway.

Police here have pulled me up cycling on a sidewalk and not given a single fuck. And that’s why I love it. They understand that the bike lane isn’t always the safest option. The law has good intent but doesn’t always work out as intended. They’re just like yeah we get it.

Rule of thumb is that pedestrians always have the right of way. Exceptions being the freeway which explicitly say no pedestrians. Even court cases pedestrians almost always win especially in a low speed place like NYC. But wait, that's not all. Bicycles when on the road are required to follow the same rules as cars. Yes a bicycle can get a ticket for speeding, running a red light, not having head and tail lights, failure to yield to anybody, and even DUI. Bicycles when on the sidewalk must yield to pedestrians. Some places require bikes to stay on the road and some places mandate bikes stay on the sidewalk. Many parks also outright ban bike riding in general.

I noticed right away that the involved driver had their sun shade down due to the setting sun being blinding at that angle. I doubt that driver even saw the cyclist at all in the first place because drivers have to be laser focused directly in front of them due to the blinding light. so no real ability to keep an eye on the peripherals like a cyclist on one side about to cross. regardless of the lights. even the traffic lights are difficult to see when the sun is at that angle.
