He was nominated in 2008 because republicans were sick of Bush and the establishment. They called him the maverick. He actually floating the idea of running with Joe Lieberman, a centrist democrat, as his running. Ultimately though he plucked Sarah Palin from obscurity and the base ended up liking her more than they liked him. If anything, she's the first modern republican.
