"The U.N. counts in the world as much as Europe does: nothing, less than a national team, less than China, less than India, or less than Israel.
NATO, as it is, no longer has a reason to exist. Because once the center of the world was the Atlantic Ocean — now, the center of the world is the world itself. Once, the world was the United States and Europe. Now, there is everything else with which a relationship must be built.
If NATO was founded to guarantee mutual defense, to ensure peace, then the more it expands, the more it becomes an organization that takes on this role at a global level — engaging with the Global South, from Brazil to India, to Australia, to Japan — and in doing so, it transforms into something profoundly different. In this transformation, Article 5 becomes the foundation of the UN — that is, of a multilateral body dedicated to defending a world that is increasingly integrated in its pursuit of peace.
