What do you think about the sex offender registry? It does seem like a good idea, but looking at it, as a European, it does seem a bit over the top and contra-productive to rehabilitation that these guys even have their place of work publicly listed.

I don't really buy that this increases the safety of potential sex crime victims. It's not like rapists and pedophiles are like venus fly traps waiting for passing women / children to stray close enough that they can drag them into the bushes and sexually assault them. Obviously you wouldn't want to employ them at a school or a women's shelter but that could be handled in a normal, confidential background check. It seems like something overly punitive that was implemented as the result of a moral panic, but which now nobody wants to reconsider, because nobody wants to bring the suspicion upon themselves that results from being seen to be "advocating" for "those people"

Increase the penalties for serious offenders. Keep em in jail longer if they're dangerous. But for porn collectors and statutory cases, or he-said/she-said cases, give them back their lives and dignity.

Not all sex offenders are created equally. They also have different levels of punishment. The lightest need to register annually for 15 years. The worst need to register every 3 months for life.

I think tier 1 needs to be for less time. I had a case come before me recently where a 19 year old was sharing pictures he found online of underage naked girls. No sexual acts performed at all. And now he's fucked until 34. Sure, he shouldn't have done that. But that's such a heavy sentence.
