Since it is your practice gun you are going to shoot a SHIT ton of ammo through it hence you want something sturdy and with cheap ammo. Naturally you will want to practice a little bit with your other guns to familiarize yourself with them and their quirks but to save money there is a reason why it's strongly suggested to have three practice guns using cheap ammo, a pistol, rifle, and shotgun.
Yeah its more guns than you would think and people like to stress your a gun crazy hoarder for daring to have more than a couple guns, but realistically speaking. 3 practice guns are needed for practice that are cheap and sturdy. 2 favored guns of each type that you like, so you have a backup. Of those guns you want a short range(shotgun), long range(hunting rifle), mid range rifle, and a pistol for emergency/carry on. Of those you can get away with a single sturdy rifle for practice as it can be used to practice both long and mid range but I know a lot of people suggest also having a specialized long range practice rifle to practice with too(personally I don't think it's a must or that necessary). So you are looking at 9-11 guns that seem like a lot, but it is not. It just gives you options for range, affordable practice, and a backup for each.
