What a waste of money, the most inhumane dogshit facility ive ever visited in my life was a group home (modern insane asylum) that costed 100$ a day per patient, you could put someone up in a white collar workers high end apartment apartment for less, somehow this was peak efficiency

Mostly misleading. The issue is more complex due to divorce laws and other stuff like inheritance laws there was quite a bit of incentive to commit people there. Additionally there were certain chemicals widely used back than. It was also used as a political tool and pool to be used for medical experimentation much more extensively. The prison population is rising for multiple reasons demographic changes, integration (basically that’s also a factor which deracinates people), lose of social bonds in general. I could go on, but that’s basically the elevator pitch.
