This shit looks like alien tech and is nigh invulnerable yet it was made in the 80s. How the fuck did the pace of scientific and technological innovation slow down this badly?

They basically solved aerospace by then design wise. Most 6th gen designs can trace their planforms back to stealth studies from the 90s. A lot of it has just been waiting for material science to catch up and make things buildable, plus a lack of an arms race from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the late 2010s. B21 is supposed to be both stealthier and able to fly more often since stealth materials have come a long way in three decades and aren’t nearly as maintenance intensive as they once were.

The Horten brothers work doesn’t really have anything to do with the B-2. Jack Northrop was obsessed with flying wings in the 40s, and his YB-35 and YB-49 bombers are much closer designs. Unfortunately the tech just wasn’t there to make them very useful yet.

90% of R&D has been allocated towards capturing and processing digital data. I mean, look at LLMs. LLMs aren't AI, they are a simple expression of the patterns within human knowledge representation, and still they are enough to upend the world. Physical systems with that kind of impact are much much more costly. So, until there's parity in cost, we're going to be sinking most of our budgets into digital shit.

>Unfortunately the tech just wasn’t there to make them very useful yet.
Lack of a tail makes them tricky to fly as they have a tendency to yaw which can lead to stalls.
This killed the 1940s flying wings.
Modern fly-by-wire technology makes this irrelevant.

It is quite honestly the very least nigh-invulnerable thing to take to the skies, which is why it requires multiple combat escorts to do literally anything.

I think they were certainly cooler but the YB-49 took a massive range hit vs the YB-35 from the switch to jet engines which hurt its chances a lot. Plus the designs had certain stability issues like >>508245390 points out. I would’ve liked to see them enter service but I get why they went with a more conventional design.

So basically I'm going to tell you because this is a bit of an autistic special interest of mine
it all started with the Messerschmitt Me 262, the worlds first operation jet fighter made by the nazi''s
the father of the jet was Dr. Waldemar Voigt and with 1000 other nazi engineers and scientists they relocated to america under operation paperclip

Dr. Waldemar Voigt worked with the american government right up until 1980 when he died.
noteably he had a whole family in america who became american patriots along with many of the paperclip offspring. these mega IQ boys and girls then went on to work in unversities, engineering and astro physics.
I can't be arsed to link all of them but basically i went through the list of operation paperclip and then tracked all their linked-in's, twitters, facebooks, memoriums ect till I realised how deeply the nazi party actually infiltrated the americans

You can see some interesting stuff in the Mojave at night. A few years back my brother says he saw an object near Baker fly so fast it was glowing, appear to stop momentarily which may have been an optical illusion due to his position, then quickly change direction and disappear over the horizon again. Air Force says NGAD demonstrators were flying by that point, so I wonder if he may have seen a flight test of that or perhaps something unacknowledged.
