It's not. That shit is cope, though I can't hold it against them to try to be positive. I used to work with people who had autism. Not the cutesy 'Rain Man' kind, the fucked up kind. And I worked with them because they were wards of the state. In healthcare, different kinds of work means you have different levels of access to patient histories and medical records. Poring over them, there was a frequent common denominator: As children they were manageable in some sense and then puberty hit and they became uncontrollable and prone to caricatures of violent and/or sexualized behavior- deeply damaged organisms marionetting normal human behavior in a profoundly broken way.

Anyway, one of the most troublingly-accurate things I ever saw on how bad it is to be a parent of an autistic child was a ~10 minute mini-documentary about a single mother with an autistic daughter. Think ex-roastie winds up getting her shit somewhat in order, lands a good job finally and has a career, gets pregnant in her late 30's when the only eggs left are the fucked up ones and shits out a nightmare baby. One of my co-workers IRL basically had the same thing happen. In the documentary what surprised me was the mom was super honest. "I just want to die. I just thinking about dying. I'm so exhausted, I just want all this to end. I love my daughter so much but she's destroying me. I'd die for her but I just want it to come sooner rather than later."

It's so bad you guys. The reality of it. You'll never see it in the news, either. And after years and years of working with individuals so profoundly tarded-up, you'll almost never see footage of what that reality is like. I have found two clips, one of which is attached. Think about what the mother is having to deal with in this clip.

And it get so much fucking worse. In every town, including yours, mainly in what look like normal residential houses until you look closely.

I browse the autism parenting subreddit and despite all the bullshit positivity surrounding autism from a vocal minority, every once in awhile someone will make a poll asking people if someday a magical cure autism pill was created, would they give it to their kids. The spectrum thing is documented, there are 3 levels of autism, and most autistic people are different from one another.
If you ever met someone with level 3 autism, it's like 20 years old + still shitting pants + still in diapers + extreme anxiety and OCD + acts like a toddler most days, but they can read and do math or something like that.
Level 2 autism is less intensity, might not wipe their ass, might need to wear diapers to bed, might act like a toddler most days, impossible to condition except with strict repetition, level 1 is less intensity, and might have some tics, might be able to live with help in a halfway house/assisted living facility, might need help with medicine and might need someone to clean up after them. Borderline people can probably live on their own but will have difficulties socializing, probably OCD, probably hyperfixate on some kind of a hobby, might withdraw completely if they don't have a routine they follow, it's still difficult.

Kids who are full grown adults and can't toilet themselves, they self harm or harm others, biting or pinching or never sleeping and screaming through the night. My nephew is about to turn 3, he is non verbal , doesn't respond to his name , likes to do repetitive tasks (i.e grabbing sand ,taking it and putting it to another place ) , flaps his hands around sometimes ,eyes dart very quick. I'm very sad , he has early intervention by getting speech therapy schools but I'm just sad he's not normal and can't copy or respond properly. It all just depends on what you get. I have two kids I care for that were nonverbal until 6 and 7, one is level 2 and the other is level 3 autism. Today they're 11 and 12 and one of them never shuts the fuck up, like he has no off switch and just inserts himself into every conversation, while the other is still limited in what he can say, but reads and writes perfectly fine.

This is bullshit. My friend's son is almost 4. Never been in daycare or preschool. Never been around other kids. Doesn't even get to interact with kids in the playground because his parents don't take him there. Kids a genius and social butterfly with everyone around him. Asks questions, understands complex social interactions, very interested in the world around him.
Meanwhile my nephew born the exact same fucking day as him, doesn't say shit to anyone, doesn't do anything but zombie stare at his tablet or people trying to talk to him. His older brother was diagnosed with level 2 autism so it's only a matter of time before he is too. And guess what? My nephew's been in daycare since he was 1, my brother takes these kids to the playground multiple times a week where they try to talk to kids but because they're so blatantly autistic the other kids don't know how to interact with them, and they even have been going to speech therapy. All did jack shit to help them.

It has nothing to do with socialization, it's simply down to these kids having broken brains. No amount of anything is going to fix them. Any person who says this bullshit of "oh it's your fault you didn't do XYZ to help your kids" couldn't make it more obvious they have absolutely no clue what they're talking about and never personally faced taking care of a kid with autism.
