The Iranian regime was not established by popular demand. During the revolution, there were far more secular nationalist groups that were rightfully upset that a foreign government just usurped their democratically elected leader. The religious groups that would eventually form the caliphate simply seized power at the next opportunity by murdering opposition groups and terrorizing their former supporters. There wasn't even the usual post revolution powersharing conflicts and falling outs. The mullahs simply declared knives out for non-believers at peak power vacuum. That level of backstabbing would make a Jew envious.

I got no love for Israelis or Jews but if an Islamic regime had to be curbstomped this decade, the Iranian caliphate would not be a bad choice.
