The Roman Catholic Church went fully off the rails at the Council of Trent when they anathematized the gospel itself when they declared that faith in Jesus Christ does not justify us before God. That was, in my mind, the point of no return. Anything that came after was just the magisterium swirling around the toilet on the way down. There are good Christian brothers and sisters in Christ who call the Roman Catholic Church home, but they do so despite of Rome, not because of it.

But your mention of Vatican II leads me on a bit of a tangent. I am not Roman, of course, but since I am a Christian and Roman Catholics are also Christian I keep myself up to speed on the broad strokes of Roman Catholic goings on.
