Trump needed to get support from the neocons in order to get the big beautiful bill passed AND end any help to Ukraine so he had to do something. We know hes been talking fairly regularly with Putin lately, we know Xi is apparently out of power and Trump's trade negotiations in Switzerland were with the new post Xi leadership clique in China instead of Xi's people. And we also know that both the Chinese and surprisingly the Russians told the Iranians they aren't going to support them retaliating military in any way. I think a deal was worked out (not with Iran but with China and more critically in this case Russia) that he could do this strike, claim victory, get the big beatiful bill passed and not have to deal with Ukraine (or really Iran anymore).
