I'm still trying to understand it myself, but from what I understand so far, there are millions of Americans, who are mostly boomer neo-cons, who believe that Christianity is an off-shoot of Judaism, and that Jews are God's chosen people because most of the Bible (i.e. the Old Testament) is talking about them and how special they are. They say God's covenant with Abraham about how he will always protect his offspring and will multiply his numbers, etc., exclusively refers to Jewish people. So it's up to Christians to protect the Jewish people, because that is God's will. As Ted Cruz said in the interview, they think "Israel" in the Bible refers to the (Jewish) "people of Israel" and the country today. So protecting "Israel" is extremely important to them.
I can't explain what they make of the New Testament or Jesus because I really don't understand.
If you've heard of Scofield, he was a major proponent of dispensationalism. He made a "reference Bible" in 1909 which got shilled everywhere and is now standard reading in many seminaries. So these ideas have been infecting American Christianity for over 100 years.
Here's an example of a Christian Zionist/dispensationalist pastor. He says around 7:30 that the #1 thing God will judge you on when you die is how you treated Jewish people in life. Literally #1, as in the most important thing you can do as a Christian. Not practicing Christianity or having faith in Christ or anything. Then he rambles about some schizo shit for the rest of the video and promotes his book.

This video explains the idea of dispensationalism very well:

If I'm wrong about anything someone please correct me. I find this all very confusing as a recently baptized Presbyterian.
