I downloaded a program to browse my browser's cache to confirm that the thumbnails were there
This means that they are planting CP on your computer, right now, even if you don't click on it. When you go to the catalog, the thumbnails are cached. When you open a thread, the thumbnails are cached.
If you have a script or extension for 4chan and you can view deleted posts, the thumbnails are cached. If you go to the archive and the images haven't been deleted yet, the thumbnails are cached.
You do not have to click on these images. Your browser stores them for you.
Protect yourself by using private/incognito when you browse 4chan. Or, disable image caching for this domain (and possibly 4cdn and the CDNs of whatever archives you use)
Be vigilant anons. The feds are very angry right now. I don't know how else to describe this, but you must be warned.
