Late 20s my back was hurting more and more. Got a new mattress that was firmer, no difference.
Had to sleep on the floor for a few days during a move and realized my back pain had disappeared.
Started sleeping on an extra thick comforter that was folded in half, the stuffing became flat after about a year.
Went online, did research, remembered that the Japanese traditionally sleep on the floor, their mattresses are called 'shikibutons', they are what the American futon was based on, but they are so wildly different.
I bought a shikibuton hand made in Japan for $800, made to order. Upon special request they can skip adding the plastic lining in it that the entire state of California or maybe US REQUIRE in furniture, they force you to sleep on plastic at all times.
The Japanese believe in only sleeping on top of natural materials.
Since I've had it my back pain is 90% resolved, still have little aches when I don't stretch enough.
I got it two years ago, they are suppose to last up to seven years.
The only bad thing about buying these is you have to get one from Japan because no other culture gives two shits about making anything properly, also if you look for one, there are numerous Chinese and American companies pretending to be authentic Japanese shikibuton masters.
The Japanese method is days worth of folding the cotton, combing it out, and repeating. Everyone else just shoves cotton into a case.
Once a week it has to be put out in the sun for an our or two to prevent mold.
A proper shikibuton NEVER has to be turned, fake ones will tell you you need to turn it weekly to prevent mold.
Many people fold theirs and put them in a corner, I roll mine up and stand it up in the closet.
Mattresses are a scam and a rip off.
