The sociological term Sublimation is the process by which a culture civilizes a barbaric past time. For instance, endogenous cannibalism, a practice common amongst our ancient ancestors, by which they ate their dead fore fathers as part of a death ritual. To ease the stress of losing an elder whose knowledge and strength they relied on, they would eat a peace of them to absorbe their power, strength and wisdom. This practice has been sublimated to the communion practice of eating a waffer and some grape juice to represent the body and blood of christ.

Now, is it possible to sublimate elements of common criminal activity. Take bank robery? Can it be turned into a fun cultural sport by which, if successful the perps get the money but become the new security team for the bank they robbed. It could be a televised game show. And the robbers and security armed with super soakers.

Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous do a similar kind of sublimation thing where they get addicts to turn their addiction in a positive direction (going to meetings, helping new members, community service)

i could definitely see how various kinds of compulsive-type behaviors in each individual's life (overeating, gambling, gaming, sex, drugs, yadda yadda) could be "sublimated" into a positive direction if the community's governing body provided appropriate channels for it (just spitballing, stuff like a community garden, staffing a community center, tutoring/watching kids at the local school, etc) and especially if those behaviors were properly incentivized (imagine every hour you volunteer, you get $25 off your taxes or utility bill) and culturally normalized (imagine if instead of "hustle grindset culture" there were influencers pushing community service).

Pickup Artist culture, tinder hookups etc could be re-channeled into a much more positive and socially healthy pattern of connection-making. romantic/dating, but also platonic friends, friend groups, community groups etc

if socially/environmentally regenerative business was incentivized the same way huge centralized extractive corporations are subsidized today, it would become way more profitable to do things that help the community and the planet than to do things that hurt it. (sadly, lobbyists and consulting agencies stand in the way of changing the current system). for example permaculture and community supported agriculture instead of big corporate agriculture and family farms. same with energy production, manufacturing, you name it.

instead of private equity, why not public equity? finding ways for people to pool their money- alternative 401(k)s and wealth funds/trusts that incentivize bioregional restoration and collaborative economics?

a better world is possible.
