Deserts are easy to survive if you know that deserts rules. There's food, year round with bursts often in Spring and Fall. Dig if you want out of the heat, get underground away from a flood area. Drowning is the main cause of accidental death in the desert. Insects are severe at night. Ball lightning is fucking real. Water is found in springs and cacti. Snakes and lizards are good eating. Deer and rabbits/hares are fine if handled with care and cooked well. Traps work well. Learn how to avoid stings and bites. My experience is mostly The Mojave growing up. And a bit as an adult in NTC, some as OPFOR. Devils claws fried in animal fat and/or butter is one my favorites. Had some last night as I grow them easily in my Central Texas garden. Learn to recognize both dumb and aggressive rabies in mammals. Agarita is a good friend. Prickly pears are big stands of potato sacks once you learn how to handle and prepare the paddles. The paddles are year round. Devils claws from June to September. Agarita branches are year round, but the fruit is only in May sometimes a bit into June. Rabbits are dangerous, lots of bad parasites. Handle with care and cook well. Armadillos only if desperate. They indeed carry leprosy and taste disgusting. Greasy, gamey, bleh. Avoid jumping cholla. Or carefully collect them as a horrifying area denial weapon.. Trust me, it's effective.

What's there to do in Phoenix other than challenge yourself to stay out of the heat? The road system is a giant grid.. Just that curve in the freeway going east/west. L.A. is weirdly close.. Everybody runs red lights.. What the fuck is up with that? University of Phoenix area seems gay. The military surplus shops are better than the ones I have here in Texas. Y'all don't have fences out in the desert I noticed.. If a person just decides to off road out of town, is it just ignored or does some pissed off rancher get mad you put tracks in his dry ass sand? Who owns those stubby mountains just outside of town?

The same places, mostly. People lived in jungles and deserts long before there was air conditioning. Some cities like Phoenix might not be as big as they were, with some Eastern seaboard cities absorbing that population instead. But it wouldn't really change anything significantly .

One time I drove to Desert Hot Springs, CA in July. By the time I got to my destination my flip flops that I left out in my truck bed curled onto themselves and turned into a ball. The climate blew me the fuck away. I was even scared to get in the pool just in case it was actually boiling. And these are 'posed to be resorts that people swear by.

It's a boring hellscape of golf courses and shitty strip malls as far as the eye can see .It's so boring the only "fun" thing to do is drink yourself to death and do meth. The sprawl is so comical it takes 45 mins to an hour to go do "fun activates". But that doesn't matter since there's a bunch of tweakers and Mexicans everywhere.

Thanks, my wife and kids tell me that as well.. But I literally have no friends anymore at 52. They've all moved away, drifted away and yeah, died. I had literally dozens of friends from childhood into my early 40's.. Then I just stopped making any new ones, and well.. I don't mind, more time for the garden, my own shooting range, hunting. This place, my knife making and blacksmith shop.. My two sons are interested in helping and doing their own similar projects with me.. My daughter goes on more hunting trips with me than my two sons combined. Wife and I still close after 26 years. Kek! Maybe that's why.. I'm happy enough so I don't feel much like leaving home that much. Semiretired, run a cattle and meat sheep operation. 270+ acres near a Central Texas river. I haven't been off this property since March so far this year. I get money leasing a cell tower on a hill, now we're 5G. A highway a little over a mile from that tower on my property edge is the intended service. But it brings this place a bit into the 21st century.
