I had a friend that handloaded special rounds. I'll preface this by saying he was a very shady guy. Anyway, what he did was recovered .38 slugs that were shot out of a different gun, but which weren't deformed horribly. Then he put them in a sabot and handloaded those in .44 special cases and used them as his daily carry. His rationale for this is if he ever had to fire in self defense, he had no faith in the "justice system" to see it that way. After how Kyle Rittenhouse was treated (and many other cases), I can't say I blame him. Anyway his plan was to just leave immediately in a self defense situation after firing and leaving it at that. If he were ever apprehended, not only would the .38 slugs be a different caliber than his gun, they would have the forensic rifling pattern engraved from a totally different weapon! The sabot was designed to pretty much disintegrate into tiny plastic bits (it was separate parts instead of one big piece).
