China really can't do anything, a war in the middle east would impact them far more than it would the US because it would disrupt their oil supply. the US is a net exporter of oil and only really imports about 7% from OPEC, about 74% of all Chinese oil is imported with most of that coming from OPEC or Iran. With Iranian oil they just relabel it as Malaysian oil to get around US sanctions. Any kind of actual war that targets their oil production would be terrible for China, so they will want to talk big but try to make sure there is no actual war that impacts their supply.
