how would you make your own cave with simple tools. Considering you are poor and live in a big city. Would you try to find a hidden spot in the near by woods? How deep would you dig, how much space would you dig out? How would you do that? What else to do to make it into a living room.

In Europe the situation is rough. You guys are too densely populated and kinda impossible for you to get large land that's gonna go unsupervised.
In the US the situation is a little better. I would imagine you need rock that you can easily work with. That would be the primary criteria.

The problem with tunnel and cave dwellings is that they have poor airflow and water drainage. There's way more to it than just digging through rock. You need proper ventilation and you never want stagnant water, even in a chamber off to the side somewhere. Dangerous things will grow in there and some can become airborne.
