During the cold war, Murrica was scared shitless that countries in Asia would go red, so they just kept throwing money all over. A good case would be Japan, their "economic miracle" was really them getting funded by the west.

In Indonesia's case, they gave tons of money to a certain General, who then set up a whole story about communists killing a bunch of military generals and was planning on taking over, so the people obviously went on a rampage, killing communists, communist sympathizers, and anyone Chinese. With military support, of course. He then goes on to be President for decades. Enriching himself and all his pals.

He eventually steps down but he already set up a military dynasty that still thrives now. The current president is his son-in-law.

Indonesia is a democracy in name only. Journalists being arrested, killed, threatened is normal.
