100% chance that the "deported citizens" were those who left with their family members who are illegals. The citizens could have stayed but their relatives could not. So they were all "deported" together. The citizens, but not the illegal alien relatives, can re-enter the US any time they want. They try to use these mixed citizen/illegal alien families to muddy the waters.

Deportation is a very specific procedure, it includes a stamp in the passport signing that the person was deported and for how long.
US cannot put that stamp into a US passport.
So they weren't deported, they were trafficked to a different country.
They, of course, being US citizens, can walk into the embassy and request being returned home. Assuming how incompetent burgers in general are, those people will need the embassy to provide temporary passports(same as to tourists who get their bags stolen) and flights.
