I believe the team that says they got these results, but I'm skeptical on the artists recreation they are using since when you look at the raw scans it's not nearly as defined.

The Egyptians were masters of using water technology. I think that these new discoveries are a series of deep wells and the screw like feature is probably something called an archimedes screw which is a mechanical method to draw water up from a lower depth using a rotating screw which could be turned using people power. The water from these well was likely used to fill the locke and channel system which was used to float large stone blocks into place. (a theory)
The system could also be drainage so that a flooding nile wouldn't damage the temple complex because excess water could be safely drained off into underground rivers.
