I hate that this reaction gets some smug snarking "what did you expect" from people, but there's a difference between American politics being dumb generally, Obama IRL shitposting with the dumb irony of Between Two Ferns, and the genuine stupidity of Theo Von hosting real politicians to joke with Vice President Vance that Frederick Douglas was gay because he wanted to free men so he could fuck them. That getting a laugh and encouragement from a VP is to say "yeah we're all retards, but we're based".

It's an interesting problem, one that isn't new, but with the general distrust of experts, all you have is what you want to frame as "conventional wisdom" which is just a collection of uninformed ideas. It works to keep a culture together, but it's often the backdrop of leadership, not a guiding principle because you want leaders to make informed decisions, not decisions that only line up with what you know and believe.

It's like how there is more than just conventional wisdom applied to your diagnosis, to your surgery. You don't feel out the problem as a group of uninformed individuals, you need expert opinions and advice. To treat government and geopolitics as simple enough navigate, you become impressed by a distraction, you stay where they want you, and the more complicated stuff Theo Von won't explore or criticize is the big stuff that makes your life worse.

There's a fine line to walk for some of this. One of the better journalists on the right to navigate this lately has been Tucker Carlson, who does host some of the more 'popular' maga figures along with SMEs such as Jeffery Sachs that can do deep explanatory dives into the material.
