I guarantee that there is more to this. I have been through border security as a European dozens of times and they simply do not use this degree of scrutiny on average travelers without at least being suspicious of them to begin with.
What likely happened is that he aroused suspicion for whatever reason, then he couldn't adequately answer their questions and likely got agitated and sperged out, and that's when they searched his phone.
Also they didn't give a fuck about the Vance meme and probably laughed at it.
He was probably flagged for being associated with pro Gaza protesters in NYC and Seattle or whatever. Probably couldn't back up his fanances and his contacts and was rightly given the boot.
I fucking despise dealing with the TSA and I have even been stopped before, but they are not just ransacking random people's stuff and kicking them out for no reason.
This guy maybe he wasn't planning on doing anything bad but it is 100% his fault for the reasons I explained, and therefore it's good that he was deported.
