US media since the late 80s has been nothing but demoralizing and virtually everyone exited cities to live in suburbs. If the US had soviet style propaganda or produced anime/BD comics everyone in the world would abandon their countries when global trade relies on resources from all over the globe and the infrastructure to transport it. Soft power is fine if a country depends on development money, but someone needs to mine diamonds in Africa they can't all be the Netherlands. You could say the same thing about the Dutch too, they're insanely rich due to logistics yet they don't promote their country at all. US doesn't have the luxury of relative obscurity.
