You can't have socialism without nationalism. Nationalism is the glass that contains the socialism. Without nationalism, the socialism spills all over the table and is wasted- those of the nation contributing to it stop and become conservatives who keep what they would have contributed to themselves. Socialism cannot exist without nationalism, or at least won't for long.

America is not a nation, it is a multinational economic zone. For most of us, our nations no longer exist for us and there is no going back to be part of the nations our grandfathers came from. The good news, if we ever come to realize it, is that we can reach out to likeminded people and form new nations built on ideas and shared culture. I don't think we will ever be able to form a nation along ethnic lines as we are all mutts. The trouble is getting people to realize they have it in their power to unify rather than just remain atomized.

The biggest part of my blood is German and that's only about 25% (the rest is a mix of different Northern/central Euros). I don't speak German and am far enough removed from Germans that I would never be able to fully relate to them culturally. The nations we did have were destroyed by many factors chiefly the Fair Housing Act and Civil Rights legislation. This is the case with most Americans and what I meant by what I said. There is no going back. We're a different from the people from whom we originally came from and we don't even have deep ties with one another.
