little boy design is super easy, US did not even have to test the design, they just dropped the first gun type bomb on Hiroshima and it worked. The desert test was the implosion fat man type and they were not sure of the timing of the explosives or the compression to get the yield they expected. The bombs are easy, the miniaturization, reliability on missiles and re-entry is the hard part. Even North Korea had to test several prototypes, and had at least one fizzle, before getting a reliable design.
