Trams are a simple design that is over 100 years old - 600VDC catenary wire and motors on each bogie typically 4 motors. Simple controls just a throttle that varies the field current and series/parallel field connection. Easily maintained to 100yo

They are still in use in Germany too, been on a few recently. Used for quiet lines and off peak times. Also been on DDR era subway cars, very nice interiors, totally unglobohomo.
