You could go over time and budget (Goldeneye), or make games about police brutality (Urban Chaos) and brutal murders (Manhunt, Condemned, Punisher). Now every game is a Fortnite colored fantasy game with a black chick designed by committee and appealing to no one. Game design is dead because every game's sole purpose is to help boost a company's quarterly earnings. There are still some rare exceptions from the Japanese, who still know how to make a good game, but gaming will not have another golden age until the money and politics exit, which won't happen without a crash.

you didn't just rent an engine and hire 200 pajeets back in the 80s and 90s. those nerds had to solve actual problems, create workarounds and develope as they created. the programmers had to know the fundamentals of graphic design etc.
what you had were studios of people that were problem solvers.
naturally I think that means you have a more interesting product, because creative people (not the meme female types) will make interesting shit.
