Returning the freed slaves back to Africa. What Liberia was founded for. I often wonder what America would look like today of that had actually come to fruition on a large scale.

Lincoln needed bodies to fight the war in 1862 and made a deal to drop mandatory repatriation after the war to get freemen in the north to fight. Thus the US colored troops were created and had a hilariously bad combat record thereafter. After the war there was a continued private venture for voluntary repatriation which failed because those who went were so absolutely fucking retarded the project became dependent on gibs.

any who went to Liberia ended up moving to Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria and other european colonies, they called them creoles. there is absolutely nothing in Liberia even before the general buttnaked war. because it was a US colony yet US said it wasn't but a new country. nobody wanted to deal with it.

>settler colony without willing settlers
>no medicine to sustain them in 1820s tropical Africa, leading to a loss of 2/3rds of the initial settler population
>insufficient population to expand or even defend their primary settlement from natives
>became totally redundant after 1865, leading to a lack of investment
>by the time it gained a place in the market, it was surrounded by colonies that exported higher quantities of every good liberia could produce
Liberia was originally intended to be a place to settle freed black americans so there wouldn't be any friction. Slave owners didn't like freedmen openly fraternizing with/near the slaves, since it undermined their justifications for slavery.
The idea was to give them land in Ohio, but Germans claimed that land, so they swapped in "Guinea" and created an expensive, doomed project.

then again there is nothing in those countries either since independence, so Liberia was ahead of its time. in the 1800s and early 1900s why would they stay there though? Monrovia was just a couple of dirt roads.

if someone returned to Liberia, they would be going back to the bush and become ooga boogas again or whatever. that's where they came from. this idea that Liberia was meant to be some US colony but actually it wasn't is inherently contradictory and why it ended up like it did.

This is wrong. Liberia from 1930 to 1980 was relatively developed, even if only in its capital city.

US flags have nothing interesting to say about Liberia even though they bring it up every day because like I said, it's a US colony but it's not their problem. I'm answering the question of why it failed by pointing out the obvious. your country is schizo, that country is schizo and it culminated in a civil war where everyone was dressed in wedding clothing. it's perfectly in line with what it was founded on.

It's a small country, and the only part actually owned by Americos was the coastline. Everything else was just included as part of an agreement between America and European states. They have a formal government now, but it's weak.

The Liberian civil wars were both between natives. A native and 17 other guys had launched a coup about 8 years before first civil war, and the resulting discrimination then extended beyond the limits of Monrovia.
Americo-Liberians made up a small portion of the country by the time they began, and the civil rights movement had succeeded back in America decades prior, so they just took the asylum offers and left.
About a decade and a half into the fighting, Nigeria decided to bash everything that moved, and when the smoke cleared, they realized the country was entirely native-run. Now they're just continuing on.

Sierra Leone has one of the biggest diamond reserves in the world, imagine if there was a giant diamond mind between Detroit and Chicago, they're going to fight over it. the reserves are not in Liberia but right next to it, and your way in is right there. on the other hand that is all they have. that's what caused the last civil war and it will probably keep happening.

"They" being who, exactly? The Kru, Gio, and Mano of Southern Michigan?
That diamond mine would belong to the state.
And no, the Liberian civil wars were not caused by Sierra Leone's diamonds. They were wars for control of the government and economy, since Monrovia was essentially the one door to the outside world's economy.

Liberia is just a few square miles larger than the state of Tennessee
43000 SqMl
Tennessee: = 42k and change

the population of slaves in 1865 was maybe 1:5th of that todays African American. so imagine how fucking populated it would be. the population of all of California fit into 1:6 the land mass. that's one packed area of Bluds

they enslaved the locals and enjoyed absolute one party rule for two centuries over the natives, with vastly more security and prosperity than neighboring states.
