If you buy a pack of cigarettes, the cashier will set them on the counter while they process the payment so you can pick them up and put them in your pocket or whatever.

For black people, the cashier holds the cigarettes in their hand until the payment goes through. They would never just set them down on the counter because they will not give them back if the card is declined. Then they will have to call the police, etc...
