when I was a kid I would see WWII photos of young men like this and there was an erie sense because of B&W perhaps.

This looks like it could have been taken in 1914 or 1942. It is grim, but just plain sad, that young men of same kin (basically) are killing and maiming one another. It is a sandbox for "future war" sans nuclear weapons.
