We blocked their water supply, destroyed their key airbases, destroyed many of their purchased from China grounded aircraft and air defense systems, destroyed key militant training hubs, and that's how they got to the negotiating table. Not because of a buffoon half the world away.

China suggested several times that they should just accept the current border as it is, but India refused. India spend like 30% of their military budget guarding the Himalaya, their capital New Delhi is simply too close to the north border.
India was actually a greater future threat to America than China in the 70s-80s. It has greater geographical advantages, the mountain range blocked most of the north leaving only small corridor, inside of it are mostly small country and Pakistan. The sea south of them has barely anything that could threaten them. Their navy at the time was probably the strongest in South Asia or even Asia except Japan. China in the hand got south korea, japan, and philipines plus island chain and many other US bases. What's more they are not lacking in ambition as they almost got pakistan before. This is why US supported Pakistan even till now because they are likely the only one that can keep check on India.
