Your feelings about them aside, on purely theological grounds, how come Jews largely accept most orthodox sects and especially the Hasidic Judaism movement when they've had movements where they too declared the new Messiah had arrived? Think for example Menachem Schneerson, many of his followers, then and now, claim he was the Messiah. And there are several more, usually from the ultra orthodox side that have come up with Messiah movements. The whole point of their rejection of Christianity and then of Islam is that they are not the Messiah, as there can only be one true Messiah and he has not come yet, at least in the Jewish view. But then these ultra Jews have Messiahs and they are considered Jewish and not heretical? It''s just inconsistent. That is the one golden rule that is supposed to separate them from the new Abrahamic movements, that the Messiah has not come and they are still waiting. By their own standards they should be excommunicating these guys from Judaism as a whole, but they are actually very popular even amongst the non ultra orthodox, who dont believe in these new messiahs but they still accept the ones that do as part of Judaism. By contrast Messianic Judaism is not accepted as a Jewish sept but as a Christian one. Because they declare a messiah when there is not one yet, and yet, the ultra orthodox that believe Menachem is the messiah are accepted as jews. Maybe I don't understand Judaism very well but I just find this particular issue interesting.
