Will Aldi soon be the second largest grocery retailer in the USA?
And why is Aldi so successful in the US? Given the inflation in the US, Aldi benefits from low prices and lean structures. With its business model, familiar from Germany, Aldi operates with significantly fewer staff per store, thus gaining an advantage over its competitors: affordable private labels, a smaller product range with smaller stores and lower real estate costs, and lower transportation costs through local meat producers.
And the strategy is apparently paying off – for the discount chain and for its customers: According to a study by Ernst & Young, US customers save up to 36 percent when shopping at Aldi. The company claims to have gained 19 million new US customers last year.
Aldi has been present in the USA since 1976. The German chain aims to have 3,200 stores in the USA by the end of 2028.
