No but they are useless for most people and certainly for most of those who pursue them. A career in academics is not worth all the money and effort you need to invest to get one from a min maxing perspective. Most people are better with a non academic job obtained through a Bachelors or Masters degree. Less effort, less money and time invested and most likely higher earnings.

Under non circumstances a student loan can be forgiven.

When I was a lonely sad bachelor at university there was actually a girl that was crazy about me.
