The only thing that makes sense to me is that if God exists, then he created this material universe to be a separate stand alone thing. Most likely for us to be able to use true free will, behind the veil of ignorance with no metaphysical answers during our brief mortal stint. The only problem with this is that the universe could also just be an uncaring natural physical phenomenon and God isn't real. What we see supports both sides, and Occams razor supports the latter. I don't want to be an atheist, but God didn't really give me much of a choice based on how he designed everything.
