The word "conservative" no longer makes sense. Todays conservatives want to return to the past, not retain the state of society right now.

Which is why they're useless, it's just a lower speed of liberalism. The whig history autism of thinking
>all cultural innovation is good because it's progress :)
>we can never go back to doing anything the way we did it in the past because that's reactionary :(
Needs to be dispensed with

Most conservatives want to return to a past they lived in, so it is technically conservatism.

In a world context, "conservative" means preserving or moving toward the traditional government of the nation.
So in the US, "conservative" means someone protecting the constitutional republic.
"conservative"/"liberal" are relative terms to a country and can mean polar opposite ideologies between countries. It's not a universal standard set of ideas.

Even that framing presents the case for returning to the past as merely some kind of sympathetic attachment to what you're familiar with, rather than supposing that the previous set-up might have been objectively better

โ€œScratch a conservative and you find someone who prefers the past over any future. Scratch a liberal and find a closet aristocrat. Itโ€™s true! Liberal governments always develop into aristocracies. The bureaucracies betray the true intent of people who form such governments. Right from the first, the little people who formed the governments which promised to equalize the social burdens found themselves suddenly in the hands of bureaucratic aristocracies. Of course, all bureaucracies follow this pattern, but what a hypocrisy to find this even under a communized banner. Ahhh, well, if patterns teach me anything itโ€™s that patterns are repeated. My oppressions, by and large, are no worse than any of the others and, at least, I teach a new lesson.โ€
