Most suburbs I've lived in are basically planned communities where the residential neighborhoods are arrayed around a central "town center" which has a grocery store and several other shops and services. I can walk to my current town center in a little over 5 minutes. Last place I lived I was actually right next to the town center itself, so a trip to the grocery was like 15 minutes total, round trip.
