I think reddit is interesting when it comes to studying controlled opposition and astroturfing. In a how far can they take it kinda thing. That site is a lost cause though. They have excellent measures for kicking out anyone that is "problematic" that is to say does not conform and have the ability to think instead of merely verbatim repeating swollen language in order to get upvotes.
I have studied mainstream forums for quite a while and I am 100% convinced that many of the most active users are following a script in order to lead discourse in a specific direction.
Take the Palestine issue for instance. You have tonnes of people sympathetic to the Arab cause which is understandable, what is not understandable however is that every single one of these most vocal pieces of shits never realize that Jewish supremacist beliefs is the root cause of the Palestinian suffering, thus they will never lead discussion in that direction and instead talk about politics, state governance and that sort and ensuring that the problem remains because talking about Jews when it comes to a Jewish state is somehow a no-go.
