For Asians living in a remote region that was then, closed off -- they rarely see anybody who isn't a local, they will ask white tourist or black tourist to take a photo with them so they can show their family and friends they had a worldly encounter that day, that picture with the white / black tourist will be one of many among the vacation slide show. When white women take a photo with an Indian guy however, that ends up as that Indian guy's profile pic.
American tourists used to do this too, take pictures with random locals or fellow tourists, the ones from the dairy states still do In a made for houswives film that starred Al Pacino in the late 70s, him and his beautiful but dying European girlfriend has their picure taken with some midwest American tourists who would mail him a copy later after she dies...people actually used to exchange mailing addresses with randoms for this.
