canada is planning a high speed rail between toronto and quebec city with stops at peterborough, ottawa, and montreal. but it wont be operational until 2043

in 15 years china went from 0km of high speed rail to over 45,000k

in 18 years canada plans to build 1000km of high speed rail

pathetic. embarrassing

China= high population density
Europe= high population density

US= not so much

what this means is that when land is cheaper you build out but when land is more expensive you build up. having sprawling cities means it's a car city and public transportation isn't a priority. having compact and/or vertical cities means they're going to be walkable and have better public transportation.

these threads are always retarded

But actually, why cant America build rail. The cities are dense enough and close enough to each other, particularity in the east

Because we're the United STATES of America.

I know it's hard to believe, especially with the bombastic president we have, but states don't play nicely with each other when it comes to footing the bill for things like trans-state railways.

It would have to be federalized and one can only imagine the level of kvetching that'll cause.

I can understand that (a lack cooperation making large projects hard).
But why don't most American cites have rail? Most commuting for city folk is from one point in the city to another. Rail could work in such cases(?)

US also has mountain ranges fucking everywhere, including deserts and other shitty terrain. Plus the country is so fucking big that filling every square inch of it with train tracks would take an eternity. I'd honestly rather just drive my car anyway, being in a train with a bunch of smelly degenerates isn't fun.

lmao you fucking retard, the US already has a very high railway density, the thing is just that it's not used for passenger services. How dumb are you to suggest that the US is
>so fucking big that filling every square inch of it with train tracks would take an eternity

you can argue that passenger trains don't make much sense, that upgrading to HSR is too expensive, that many areas are too low density, but saying you don't *have* railways shows how dumb you are.

There's a combination of factors at work here and they should also apply to Canada.
1. The US put a lot into their highway systems post WW2 in order to improve the ability for the military to move their troops and armor to where needed in the event of an invasion.
2. The US was obsessed with trains while still colonizing the west, but nowadays they don't like having to pay laborers to load and unload truck or train cars more than once. This is why all the money is currently in port cities. They'd rather that the thralls all move to the coast than pay for loading shipping containers onto a train or truck.
3. The one reason that probably everyone jumped on was that the population does not want passenger trains because they'd become a haven for ghetto trash. It's not like they don't already have a problem with cities giving homeless people bus tickets to southern cities where they can spend the winter. Add to that, those evading the law, and you have what we have, an expensive Amtrak system that is too pricey for vagrants to want any part of.
