1. The US put a lot into their highway systems post WW2 in order to improve the ability for the military to move their troops and armor to where needed in the event of an invasion.
2. The US was obsessed with trains while still colonizing the west, but nowadays they don't like having to pay laborers to load and unload truck or train cars more than once. This is why all the money is currently in port cities. They'd rather that the thralls all move to the coast than pay for loading shipping containers onto a train or truck.
3. The one reason that probably everyone jumped on was that the population does not want passenger trains because they'd become a haven for ghetto trash. It's not like they don't already have a problem with cities giving homeless people bus tickets to southern cities where they can spend the winter. Add to that, those evading the law, and you have what we have, an expensive Amtrak system that is too pricey for vagrants to want any part of.
