When you feel locked out of polite society, trash society becomes your "normal" and "average." And the less we can keep up with the tide of standards held by the wealthy, the more we're all going to find these trashy places as "normal" and "average."
When you think "average" you're probably thinking middle class --- that is actually a minority in the world, with the wealthy being an extreme minority beyond that.
