The idea is that you have a higher power judging you than the judge, so any lie you tell will be judged by an even higher power than the state. You are allowed to substitute other holy books if you are of a different religious background. One retard even used a 3rd grade science textbook once because she believed in science (tm). The point remains, there may not be an official american religion but a belief that you are to do right in the eyes of something greater than your own petty self is a requirement.

You don't understand what the meaning of the phrase is. It means people in positions of authority will be held to a much stricter standard than the plebs, when it comes time for God to judge them.

You should be told to swear on a constitution or state constitution document. On the bible I would just lie and say, "I solemnly swear...", because it's just a circus prop for the man.
