But crucially, there's a whole lot of wisdom entwined with the plotlines. A lot of character depth. A lot to learn if a man is so inclined.
Europeans were never able to create anything of that magnitude, btw. For all their "we wuz superior" chest-thumping they've got nada.
Virgil translated Homer's epics, sure, but nothing original was created. Homer was Hellenic too, way pre-christianity. Way before ancient Greece as you know it.
All these epic poems including Gilgamesh were composed before writing systems were developed, btw. Which is why the rhyme scheme and meter mattered greatly. Because they had to be orally transmitted for generations.
